The practical bits for parents and carers: Online Scout Manager, weekly programmes, meeting times, uniform, payments, and who to talk to if you have a question.
Online Scout Manager
All our sections use Online Scout Manager (OSM) to run the group's admin. It's where you'll find most of what you need between meetings. In OSM you can:
- Sign your child up for camps and events
- See their badge progress
- Pay subscriptions and for events
When your child joins the group, your section leader will get you set up on OSM.
Keep an eye on your email
Email sent through OSM is how we communicate by default. Please check your inbox for details of nights and events where the place or time is different from usual. If you think you've missed an email, log in to OSM: it keeps an archive of recent emails we've sent.

More than one child with us?
Use the same email address and password when you set up your account, and OSM will link all your children together automatically.
Weekly programmes
Each section publishes a termly programme, so you can see what's coming up each week and what to wear. If anything changes, we'll email you through OSM.

Uniform
Every member wears the standard Scout uniform for their section. Your section leader will let you know exactly what's needed when your child joins.
What to wear each week
Each week's entry in the programme says what to wear:

Our group colours
- Our group neckerchief (the "necker") is gold and black, colours that go back to the group's early days in 1926.
- Our members also wear a yellow Methodist shell badge, a sign of the group's long link with the Methodist Church.
Subscriptions & payments
Subscriptions and event payments are handled through Online Scout Manager.
Your section leader will explain the current subscription and how to pay when your child joins. Camps, trips and other events are listed in OSM too, so you can sign up and pay for them in the same place.

Camps, trips & activities
Nights away, trips and special activities are some of the best bits of Scouting. Here's how they work.
Signing up
Camps, trips and events are listed in Online Scout Manager, where you can sign your child up and pay.
Medical and permission forms
For activities that need one, your leader will send you a link to fill in a medical and permission form online. Forms are kept for 2 months after the event and then securely destroyed.
Times and places
When a meeting or event is somewhere else, or starts or finishes at a different time, we'll email you the details through OSM.

Taken photos at a group event? You can share them with us through our photo upload page.

For anything about your child's section, the best way to reach the team is your section's email address. Missed a week and not sure what's happening? Email your section or speak to your section leader.

Safeguarding
Keeping young people safe comes first in everything we do. Like every Scout Group, we follow the Scouts' national safeguarding policy and procedures.
How Scouts keeps young people safe
- Everyone who volunteers with young people, regularly or on an overnight activity, goes through the Scouts' vetting process, including a criminal record (DBS) check and references.
- All volunteers complete safeguarding training, and every adult follows the Scouts' safeguarding code of conduct, known as the Yellow Card.
- Camps and sleepovers must have at least two adults. The only exception is some peer-led Scout and Explorer expeditions, and you'll always be told beforehand if no adult will be present. Young people and adults always sleep separately, and volunteers never take a young person away on their own.
- Before taking young people away, leaders give you notice, ask your permission and give you a way to contact the group while they're away.

Worried about a young person?
If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 and ask for the police.
Otherwise, please speak to your section leader or our Group Lead Volunteer, Matt Geeling, via contact@1hg.org. Anyone, including parents and young people, can also report a safeguarding concern straight to the Scouts, whenever it happened, or talk to one of the helplines below:

Common questions
How do I find out what's happening this week?
Your section's page shows what's coming up, and each section has a printable programme too: both are linked under Weekly programmes. If a meeting is somewhere else or at a different time from usual, we'll email you through OSM, and OSM keeps an archive of recent emails if you've missed one.
What if we miss a week?
Don't worry. Email your section (for example beech@1hg.org; all the addresses are under contacting leaders) or speak to your section leader, and they'll fill you in.
My child is moving up a section. What happens?
Each Scout section covers an age range:
- Beavers: 6–8 years
- Cubs: 8–10½ years
- Scouts: 10½–14 years
- Explorers: 14–18 years
As your child gets near the top of their section's age range, their section leader is the best person to talk to about moving on to the next one.
How do I update our contact or medical details?
OSM's parent portal lets parents keep their contact and medical details up to date, so log in to OSM (opens in a new tab) to check them. If you can't see how, or something has changed that the leaders should know about straight away, tell your section leader.
For camps and trips that need one, you'll also fill in a medical and permission form for that activity, using the link your leader sends you.

Can I help out?
Yes, please! Everyone who runs the group is a volunteer, and there are lots of ways to help, from regular roles to the odd evening a month or practical jobs behind the scenes. No experience is needed: training and support come from the Scouts, and DBS checks are provided at no cost to you.
